Thunder Grey with Bistre Brown, Denim, Powder Blue, Crimson, Pearl, Peach & Olive Green Hannya Demon Japanese Ukiyo-e Print Silk Pocket Square
The Hannya demon is a prominent figure in Japanese folklore and traditional Noh theatre. Its tale unfurls around a woman ensnared by jealousy and wrath, transforming into a demonic entity known as Hannya.
Traditionally, the narrative weaves the sorrowful plight of a woman betrayed or forsaken by her lover, stirring within her a tempest of heartbreak and betrayal. These fervent emotions manifest into a monstrous form, the Hannya demon, characterised by a horned, grotesque mask often depicted in Japanese art and theatre.
Hannya is often portrayed as a vengeful spirit seeking retribution against those who wronged her, particularly her former lover. The story serves as a cautionary tale about the destructive power of jealousy and the consequences of untamed emotions.
